When Herma had entered the room, he’d caused a stir, but when Rees returned people gravitated to him. Eros hovered in the doorway, looking at their table. Rees was surrounded by their normal circle of friends as well as Elena, who had taken Justin’s seat. Mason was walking away, a pensive expression on his face. They surrounded Rees as he leaned over a sheet of paper that he sketched on.
When Rees saw Eros watching, an expression of joy crossed his face, and Eros swallowed hard past the lump in his throat. How had he been blessed to have this young human enter his life? All those years ago, when he’d first seen Psyche, he’d fallen for her instantly. And not so long ago he’d literally fallen for Rees, tumbling over his stack of luggage.
I’m in love. Again.
He remembered seeing Rosa earlier that evening. She’d seen him, her eyes had briefly lit when they’d greeted each other, but her heart and mind had been elsewhere. It broke his heart…destroyed him. Yet the Fates obviously had gentle feelings toward Eros, bringing Rees into his life just as he was faced with the loss of a dream he’d carried for so very many years.
“Eros!”
A hand on his arm, smiling faces calling to him, tugging him in the direction of the dance floor. In a way, he and Rees were the same. People gravitated to them because they felt better in their presence. The thing was, as a god, Eros drew people through his charisma. Rees though…he was just kind. He was brilliant and managed to find that spark in others.
One last look at his lover, who smiled and waved, and Eros let the crowd of dancers surround him, the beat of the music carry him away. Hot, sweaty bodies milled around him, the scent of sweat mingled with arousal and high-end perfume. He laughed, throwing himself into the dance, knowing that within minutes his infectious arousal would begin to work through the veins of the young—and not so young—who danced with him. This was how he’d ended up in the arms of countless strangers, in drug- and alcohol-laced hotel rooms with people he’d fucked and quickly forgotten in his quest for Psyche.
Now he’d found her, yet the need to reunite had faded. His libido spiked, but only one man could soothe it.
Behind him, someone moved from dirty dancing to dry humping, grinding into his hip. The rhythm was perfect and within moments the girl fell away in a climax. Before him two virile men surrounded a young woman, their hands on her body, their kisses tangling and blending from one to the other.
He ached with need. Every glance in the direction of the table showed him that Rees was watching, diverted from his conversations. Others were watching as well, some in blatant admiration, others harboring resentment. Elena glanced at Rees then at Eros, and her face went hard for a moment. Her jealousy stung like a bee among the flowers.
He blew her a kiss.
